Commercial Staff Profiles
Dean, Combined Advisor
‘Before coming to Swinton, I was working for a local council, so it was a pleasant surprise to see just how quickly things moved here — it never takes long to get anything done. It was a real eye opener.
As things in the insurance industry never stand still for long, it can be challenging keeping pace with the continual changes. But the support is always there for you to build on your knowledge. Talent is recognised, and everyone wants you to get on.
I work as part of a team of seven, but there are over 200 people in the wider Commercial unit. Although we’ve got people with a wide mix of skills and experience, no one person can do everything, so teamwork is very important. Having so many people here also means there’s a real buzz, not only in work but on the many social events and nights out we organise.
I’d say that if you’re open-minded and enthusiastic with plenty of initiative, coming here is a fantastic opportunity to learn lots and meet lots of interesting people in a fun and friendly team environment.’
Dave, Regional Manager
‘Having worked for a company that was merged with Swinton, I was more than willing to stay because I felt I really had something to offer. And I knew there’d be lots of opportunities to make a contribution in a business this big.
The culture here is very much about achieving the wider business objectives. It’s driven by performance, but there’s just as much emphasis on recognising and rewarding people who do well. In fact, in my very first year, I was lucky enough to receive Swinton’s ‘Outstanding Contribution’ award.
I’m responsible for 60 people across seven sites, and premiums totalling over £20m. Commercially, the biggest challenge has been integrating our recent acquisitions into the business, but it’s very rewarding to know I’ve played a part in our growth — both when it comes to performance and people.
As for the future, I’m aiming to get to the most senior level of management. But I’ve more than enough to do in my current role, and, for the time being, I’m happy to build on my skills and experience. But I know that when it comes to achieving my ambitions, I’ll have all the support and encouragement I need.’
